How to Ferment Quality Chicken Feed for Backyard Chickens

Fermented chicken feed has become quite the rage among backyard chicken keepers, and for good reason. Not only does it boost the nutritional value of the feed, but it also promotes gut health for backyard flocks. If you’ve got chickens at home, you might be wondering how to get started with fermenting your own feed. This guide will walk you through the simple process, specifically using the Scratch & Peck Feeds – a favorite among many!

Opt for a high-quality feed like Scratch & Pecks’ Organic Layer Feed 16%. Not only is it organic, but it’s also non-GMO, making it a perfect choice for your backyard chickens.

For this guide, we’ll use 2 cups of Scratch & Peck Feeds as our base measurement. This quantity is perfect for my small flock of 7. You can adjust accordingly based on the number of chickens you have.

You’ll want to add double the amount of water to the feed for a 1 to 2 parts ratio. So, for the 2 cups of feed, pour in 4 cups of water.

Mix the measured feed and water in a container with a lid. Ensure that all the feed is submerged and the container big enough to allow the mixture to expand as it ferments.

Now, slightly cover the bucket with a lid. It’s essential to allow some airflow, so don’t seal it tightly.

Place the bucket in a cool, shaded area and let it ferment for up to 3 days. You’ll notice bubbling and a slight sour smell – that’s the fermentation magic happening!

To ensure you always have fermented feed ready for your flock, set up a 3-day rotation system with multiple buckets. Start a new batch every day so that on any given day, you have one bucket ready to serve, one fermenting, and one you’re starting anew.

Once fermented, serve the feed to your chickens. You’ll see them flock to it with excitement! Always ensure any leftover feed is cleared out before adding fresh feed.

Fermented feed offers a plethora of benefits for your backyard chickens. It’s a simple and cost-effective method to enhance their diet, ensuring they get the best nutrition possible.
